In a city like Dubai, where its reputation is built on stratospheric heights, Al Qusais represents the lower end of the emirate’s vertically-minded architectural nature. Yet, like Lionel Messi, Al Qusais also has plenty of assets. Located just 15 minutes from Sharjah, on the outskirts of the Dubai, rents in the area are affordable.

Apartments are also spacious by Dubai standards and the area has plenty of amenities – from schools and restaurants to parks and supermarkets. It’s also a handy spot if you work at the airport so it’s popular with cabin crew, who incidentally need to be 5’2.5” if they want to work for Emirates.

The area is also home to Al Qusais Pond Park, where you can pound along a 2km running track, entertain your brood in the kids’ play area and bulk up your biceps using the outdoor gym equipment. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you can venture to one of Al Qusais’ multitude of affordable restaurants. The area’s known for its tantalising array of Indian and Pakistani options – a reflection of Al Qusais’ predominantly Asian expat population. Nearby Al Qusais is less than 10km from a destination that’s popular with tourists and residents alike – Al Mamzar Beach Park. Rent a sun lounger, take a swim or try your hand at water sports in a vast park that features long, sandy beaches and sprawling green spaces, as well as dozens of casual dining options.
